and the Playstation 3, which now offers you a slightly unstable dedicated player for TVNZ ondemand

I think you left out "...and appallingly low-resolution..." between the words "unstable" and "dedicated". I use it occasionally to catch up on a 6pm news bulletin and usually find myself switching quality settings only to find I already was in "high" quality mode.

And where is Sony's Play TV with Freeview support?

And everything Matthew just said about NZ ISPs and traffic. Also, too.

  • Hard News: PEDA: Who, what, where, why,

It's hard to judge without having seen the performance in question, but perhaps a better analogy to David Fane is Michael Richard's infamous Laugh Factory incident.

As for Brian Edwards' blog, perhaps someone needs to explain to him (and Duncan Garner, amongst others) that misusing a web text field that allows you enter any arbitrary email address isn't exactly committing identity fraud. [1]

[1] I'm sure there are humourless lawyers among us who will attempt to argue differently. Doing so will merely prove my point. :)

  • Up Front: Bonging Science Doughnut Time,

Only been "lucky" enough to have 2 CTs and a PET scan this year, can't say I've had the pleasure of an MRI. But if I never have to drink another litre of CT contrast medium it'll be too soon (and I know that'll be happening in the next month or so).

  • Speaker: Knuckleball,

I'd have thought a good compromise solution would be:

    * the referee calls it as he sees it;
    * anyone caught out on the TV goes before the football judiciary facing fines, or match bans, or whatever it is that people face in football.

    Yep, exactly.

  • Speaker: Knuckleball,

I appreciate that reflexive argument against a conventional wisdom is pretty much Pundit 101, but arguing that the fucking vuvuzela is not the most annoying innovation in sport fandom is frankly asking to piss your credibility out the window.

As I've said elsewhere, I'm sure the atmosphere at the game is amazing, and if that endless Bb drone appeals to the SA fans then so be it. But Television pays for the event to happen, and on television that drone is purely an irritant and should be stopped.

And yes, apparently World Cup class football is a cynical game of professional diving, as practiced by nearly everybody.

  • Hard News: Climate science and the media,

I find it increasing difficult to accept the "honest criticism" argument from any AGW skeptics.

  • Hard News: Touched by the hand,

BTW, if the literal definition of "unbelievable" is "I can't believe they're going to charge that much for it in NZ given the current US-NZ exchange rate" then perhaps the tag line will prove to be accurate.....

  • Hard News: Touched by the hand,

Can someone with contacts at Apple NZ give them a bollocking for the splash page that's been up at http://www.apple.com/nz/ since the iPad was announced.

"A magic and revolutionary product at an unbelievable price."

Oh really? What would that price be then?

There's certainly no clue at http://www.apple.com/nz/ipad/, nor at the NZ online Apple store. So until they're willing to announce a price, I think that tag line should fark right off.

    Yours, Peeved of Palmy etc.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

Yep, Pertwee was the first I really remember. But Tom Baker was the definitional Doctor to me. Complete hero-worship. :)

I've been loving the new series. Ecclestone was great, and was the most "alien" of the new Doctors IMO. I was immediately distressed when it leaked that he'd agreed to the part on the condition he only did one season. And then David Tennant came along and blew my preconceptions away.

Got to admire Russell Davies for (a) resurrecting the series and (b) having the sense to walk away when he was running out of steam. My fanboy-love for Steven Moffat is bridled, but only just, and "Eleventh Hour" lived up to my expectations. Matt Smith did a great job, Karen Gillan really did steal the show, and the Doctor's final conversation with the Atraxi makes me wonder if we're going to see more of his determination that "Everybody Lives" if he can help it. Because I'm sure that'll always end swimmingly....

And I did immediately think the short skirt and stockings were a bit saucy even for a fictional TV representation of Britain's police force. :)
