Dyan, yeah, it was (as you no doubt realise) a flippant comment. I'm a nervous flyer myself. I've gotta stop watching Air Crash Investigation.
What if instead of abortion we swapped it for infanticide?
Why would we do that? An infant can survive without the use of another person's body, a foetus can't.If the infant in question needs their father's kidney, liver or bone marrow to survive they have no legal or moral right to demand that biological father hand over the use of his body to an infant. I would be horrified to see anyone's rights extend to the use of another individual's body, against the donors wishes.
Excellent way of putting it. (This kind if fleshes out the 'Violinist' thought experiment really well.)

I'm sorry but I'm having difficulty understanding that. Could you say that again.
Well, Tess is saying that any human life, up to and including a just fertilised egg, is as deserving of protection as any other human life, right?
And so a fertilised egg can be swapped for any other human in any true statement about the right to life.
So, if I say a fertilised egg can be killed in case of incest, I must also say the same of a month-old baby if I am to be consistent. And if I say a month-old baby can't be, I must also say the same in the case of a fertilised egg, because I have granted that the two things are the same for this purpose.

you're the scientist
Poor baby.

Do's he still wear electric socks?
I'm afraid they only survived a decade or so beyond the war, but I they got quite a lot of use during skiing, skating and hunting seasons.

It's not my fault if my mother these days only buys me books on the history of the Church.
You lucky duck - all I get is the Reader's Digest .

Proves too much; incest exceptions premise bans on (for example) abortions-because-the-condom-was-shoddy. The argument-from-forced-medical-care won't let you ban those kinds of abortions, so you can't use it for or against incest exceptions.

He was in hospital 3 months and the techniques of the great Archie McIndoe (from Dunedin!) were responsible for restoring his skin - he had only the faintest scars on his neck, where the grafts were placed. The patients called McIndoe "The Chief" and said he used to make them laugh by barking at the junior surgeons, then winking at the men as the junior surgeons scurried around looking terrified.
Just been reading about [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_McIndoe|McIndoe]] in relation to Richard Hilary.

I take it you've avoided the news this week then...
BTW, and Off Topic; I blame that one on the Bermuda Triangle. Dismayed at the way the sceptics haven't picked up on that one yet.

If Pro-choice over abortion is the lobby also pro-choice on Euthanasia?
To me they would have a similar logic as rights over ones own body, but it hasn't gained the same popular/legal currency.
-
But Pro-life lobbyists might see them as the same. What do you think Tess, do you make distinctions between euthanasia and abortion?
I think both are morally wrong. However I have sympathy for those with say, motor neuron disease or MS, for example, who would rather have euthanasia. I don't agree with their decision, but at least they aren't killing someone else.
OTOH I think euthanasia is highly open to abuse and pressure from family. Maybe not conscieous pressure, but it is horrible to see a loved one die a slow death. I worry that legal euthanasia could create a duty to die feeling across society, especially for the severely disabled whose care is expensive.
-
I am totally in favour of freedom of choice for both abortion and voluntary euthanasia - for sane adults (or, when it's a matter of abortion for raped
child or adolescent females, their independent non-religious guides/guardians.)I'd continue this right to euthanasia (and it will become so) for those who have made a living will (which means you have designated trusted people to act on your behalf when you no longer can.)

Steven, Tess & Islander, thank you.
Islander surely religion isn't all bad. What about Father Xmas & the Easter Bunny? It's good times with family & friends.

Just Thinking-cool! We call those family/friends hui- Matariki and big birthdays, and Hogmanay, & golden wedding anniversaries (one happening in the family this week):takiaue & season openings and birth & death bonfires...social & seasonal celebrations which are hugely sad or enjoyable. greatly momentous & important to those involved - and totally irreligious. And entirely human-

Geez Joe! Wonderously awful!

thus spake a truly silly fellow, who has not even reflected for one minute on how he might ever have come to be in possession of such a thing as language (not to mention the freedom to play so dull with it), and i reckon the best thing for heem is to get out there with a big-ass placard declaring I'M ROOTING FOR THE MONKEYS
O Glory yerself mate!
-
lilp - I know a great deal about language, including possible origins (which obviously includes fellow primates.)
Since your wordplay is banal, and your insights - well, ok for an idiot- I'll not respond to you again.
