I love a good slanging match as much as the next guy, but being one of the bad guys here I consider myself more prone to being banned.
Well I wish I could give Brother Bill his great thrill
I would set him in chains at the top of the hill
Then send out for some pillars and Cecil B. DeMille
He could die happily ever afterBob Dylan, Tombstone Blues.

If you don't quite understand Morgan's problem then read his post where he said authority needs to be constantly reviewed and checked. Now you are claiming that the population is the real authority. My point should be obvious...
I've known Morgan for more than ten years, and I still don't understand his problem.. But I can safely say that is not it.
Authority does need to be questioned and reviewed. That is fundamental in modern democratic societies. Public accountability, checks and balances, all that.
In this case the Council has the power and authority to restrict marches and parades on Queen St through the granting (or not) of permits. However there is also the ability that people can conduct parades without permit - in fact it happens a few times a year at least. In that case the council has the option to pursue legal consequences for those people.

I've always found it's a whole lot easier to maintain the moral high ground in a debate when you don't resort to making up silly versions of a person's name.
I have never claimed the "Moral High Ground" Morals vary from person to person, to a certain degree. There are, no doubt, many morally defined positions that Grunt shares with many of us. I don't believe that anyone on this site would condone theft, lying, murder or even cavorting with your neighbours ox. There is, unfortunately , nothing in Grunts book of rules, the Bibble, that says "thou shalt not rape" or "Thou shalt not beat your children" which is why the likes of Bob McCrossprick claim to occupy the "Moral High ground" and justify their repugnant vision of a "Perfect" society. My Dog has higher morals than those self righteous tossers.

However I'm not sure about NZ, and maybe Graeme Edgeler (sp?) has an opinion. I know Rotorua council were trying to trespass people out of "their" city centre, which implies that the streets are private property of the council, and we only use them at their discretion.
At a quick glance ,I found some information

I tries to follow that link Sofie but you apear to have some junk in the url. So I fixed it for you. ;-)
Love your work speshly the early stuff. :-) -
Now can I fix my shpeelign mistakes? No, there's no EDIT FUNKSHUN. grrrr

Dylan, you seem to love bureaucracy... not to mention Morgan. You also seem to have rejected the idea of proper authority completely. Let me clue you in. What you describe is not authority .. it's the ability people have to express opinion.
Steve - try Deuteronomy 22:25-27 and Ephesians 6:1-4
-
Some people have a notion of authority rooted in old testament traditions. In the States, they're often called Republicans and Charlton Heston and his ilk are their heroes. George Lakoff analysed them as demanding a "strong father" to tell them what to do and assure their survival in a hostile world. More here: http://www.rockridgeinstitute.org/projects/strategic/nationasfamily/nationasfamily/index.html
That type of authority only works if it is completely beyond question - which is why it fits so well with faith-based approaches to life. Neocon promotion of "executive presidency" is along the same lines, where any decision of the President is logically above the law, because, well, he's the decider isn't he. Heaven forbid that there could be limits on the authority of decisionmakers like city councils.
Most kiwis would laugh at that concept of "authority" being held up as the only right way to live, no matter how stridently it is proclaimed by adherents.

Is that the best you can do?
Deuteronomy 22:25-27
25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a girl pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the girl; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders his neighbor, 27 for the man found the girl out in the country, and though the betrothed girl screamed, there was no one to rescue her.
ref
But if she is not betrothed?22:28 If a man find a damsel [that is] a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
22:29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty [shekels] of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
so it's ok if "the damsel" doesn't belong to a man, Eh?
Ephesians 6
Children and Parents
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2"Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3"that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."[a] Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.Exasperate?
The training and instruction is, I believe, what you guy's call Paddling
Don't bother arguing, I could refute all of your silly arguements but, like most here, can't be bothered. -
Thanks Sofie (& Steve). I should have expected that Mr Knight would pronounce.
I didn't know that the common law rights of way still existed in NZ and stand corrected.
-
Poorly worded alright - as useful as asking when people stopped beating their wives. Though I now wonder on re-reading if they're actually talking about people correcting parents by smacking them?
-

Not that you're being left out in the cold, Steve, but a word of advice (and this is not original):
Never wrestle with a pig - you assume undignified positions, you get covered in mud and you're left with the suspicion that the pig enjoyed it.
Most trolls, I think, are not the master manipulators they imagine themselves to be, but narcissists looking for confirmation, however negative it may be.
-
And I might add, what an unenviable space to be.
Blogs: at worst, an electronic tar baby.
Indeed, it is Saturday. The whisky and the DVD are far more attractive alternatives to having a life.
-
Steven C:
There seems to me, to be an oxymoron in there.
You get that with questions that are more loaded than a Tommy gun.
-
Heh, graphics been washed out for months around here. Speaking o sad, I've been crunching stats all day. Whisky sounds v attractive about now.
-
I went outside today and the Graphics where indeed, crap.
You're starting to sound like one of those wussy Pauline Xtians - can't hit the sinful streets without feeling that you're about to lose your lunch.
-
Thats true, I went outside today and the Graphics where indeed, crap.
I went into "my pictures" today and looked at the plants on the deck. I then let the dog out and poured a glass of wine.

Ah. Well then, let me think about that...............I quite like pigs, they seem to be quite contented to snuffle around in the muck, I quite like K Road. Sometimes, after a good night, I may, indeed, feel a little grubby after enduring an undignified position but, at least, I wrestled a pig.
I guess it depends which way you look at it.
And. Not having to go out to clubs every weekend to pull chicks, or blokes or yourself or whatever means you actually have a life, at last.
;-) -
I wrestled a pig.
Me too. Even after he was bacon he kept insisting he was the one doing the eating. It would have been hilarious if it wasn't so monotonous. Just a big plate of crispy bacon, I really wanted some scrambled eggs. But bacon was all he could come up with.

So, uh Steve, when you said there was nothing against rape and child abuse in the bible you were ignoring the examples I provided, right?
-
Well, hows about that that weather, ey.

Sigh. Wrong again. Second post after yours on page 14.
There's none so blind as those who will not see. -
When you said this...
<blockquote>There is, unfortunately , nothing in Grunts book of rules, the Bibble, that says "thou shalt not rape" or "Thou shalt not beat your children"</blockquote>
.. you were ignoring the passages you have to argue against. Weren't you? -
Today it seems I have to rely on the Almighty to point it out to me before it smashes into my face and kills me.
So. To save the "Almighty" from having to point it out I will repost (for Grunt's sake because he seems to be incapable of navigating back to page 14)

Steve. You claimed that at no stage did the bible condemn rape or child abuse. When I point out two examples of the bible doing just that you have lost that point. Grow up, dude. It's not like none of us have never been wrong before...
