I'm reliably informed there were people who were in distress on halted trains who notified train staff, were promptly (and safely) attended to. It's not pleasant being on a crowded, stuffy train or bus, especially when it's been delayed. But having seen the trauma train drivers go through after a work-related fatality, I'm rather short of sympathy for people who were so damn irresponsible.
I am informed that the converse took place; and that NZ Rail employees, who just happened to be in the vicinity at the time, marshalled people off trains and onto the berm safely - where I would guess they made their own way to the game.
At 7.55 PM we drove from Mt Eden to Newmarket - to the down side of the Domain - to see the fireworks - the drive took about 3 minutes.
At about 8.20 PM we drove from Newmarket to Mt Eden, it took all of about six minutes and we passed a train and felt sorry for those left on it - we did see another train .at the Wynyard Street Level crossing somewhat depleted of passengers making ti way to Eden Park.
We were home to witness the Haka, the response and the kick off on TV..
I have worked in Public Transport and there is a culture of under and not reporting of failures and near misses that could result in a fatality.
There are many reasons Public Transport needs to go back into Public Ownership and none that I can think of that support persisting with the current situation.
