On the subject of venues and eras this tribute to Chicks from last week's Critic might amuse some of you.
(Should have gone with the Sammy's thread, but much easier to follow Ian's comment.)

In the Arts Precinct the government's giving you, has anyone thought about music venues, shared spaces, art cafes, etc? Or is it all institutional?
It seems such an obvious need.

pain in the arts...

There are various arts / entertainment areas as well as the Arts Centre - we are reassured that they will all be 'vibrant' areas - not sure who will run the Hospitality sides of these areas or exactly where the daily foot traffic is coming from - music or theatre students won't be enough to support expensive cafes which will be paying high rents in new buildings...
here is the gummint's plan for the performing arts precinct:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/77672442/Art-studios-and-apartments-planned-for-Chch-performing-arts-precinctI hope they don't design the Courts space for them so desperate are they to have them back in town - really it is all up in the air and pipe dreams...
Johnny Moore had something to say about the inner city recently: http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/business/the-rebuild/77714683/johnny-moore-suburban-malls-vibrancy-highlights-a-languishing-centre-city
and the Lichfield Laneways may emerge again: http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/77694712/laneways-revival-projects-get-under-way
Dux Central opened in the Twisted hop building:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/72131323/Dux-Central-adds-to-Christchurchs-post-quake-vibeNew Regent street which was an outpost of civilisation has had the brakes put on as some un-strengthened buildings stopped the Tram coming through - trade down 40 - 60% for businesses there. - the hurt keeps on coming
and hey the Government is pushing for a footbridge to nowheresville - wahoo!;
http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/77862638/design-contest-for-new-avon-footbridgeOne News yesterday pointed out that thus far at least $15 million has been spent on the yet untendered, sized, planned or priced Convention centre - so I'm not holding my breath for any small fry to get a look in until the Government just walks away.
There was a great letter in the Press today (Tuesday 15 march) from someone performing in a play 'Rock of ages' in the old Gym on the Arts Centre site that The Free Theatre has the current use of (they are long time AC tenants) but apparently this wonderful and versatile space may be converted into yet another restaurant - like Chchch needs another restaurant! (it was the Academy Cinema before shit happened).

I blame Sideshow Bob for the whole vibrant schtick.

this tribute to Chicks
Bats Chicks poster sourced from:
http://relicsmusic.co.nz/collections/flying-nunand a poster I did back in the ’90s for a great night at The Dux (Arts Centre site) and the whole thing put together with photocopies (including all the type, letter by letter) and wax – fun times!
ps: note the sun and moon elements were done by Alec Bathgate for a Tall Dwarfs record.
