Ohhhhh I see. Hadn't realised that it was only for the labels. In which case, of course they're the ones nominating their acts. It makes sense, I guess.
-
artists and their labels nominate themselves for award recognition. That 'feels' weird man, just wrong. its someone elses job to say you're good, not yours.
That's a ridiculous statement. It's the way that all industry awards of any kind operate. And if it wasn't that way, I'm sure you'd complain about that too.
its not the members of rianz that vote, its the members of rianz that are eligible on for awards, exclusively unless you pay a fee.
Like Simon said, if you care enough about it, you'll either be a member of IMNZ or you'll come up with a $100 entrance fee.
My point was I'd love to see recognition go across the board
Here's an idea: how about you do it yourself?

How's Leo enjoying Spore?

How's Leo enjoying Spore?
He's storming through it: last seen designing a spaceship, which isn't bad considering that yesterday he was just a little protozoan.
Nice feature: he was playing yesterday and then saw a creature that he'd made with the Spore Creature Creator when it was released a while ago. The system uploads the creations of users and adds them to the mix for everyone. His was a pink dinosaur -- it still had hs creator credit on it. Ironically, it killed him.
Al from Scoop was round last night, and he pronounced it to be "the first single-player multiplayer game".
And Leo's still a bit shocked about getting an email from Andrew Wilmott, the lead developer on the game.
Andrew is -- ahem -- a Hard News reader of many years' standing ...

Still very cheap & still very capable

That statement my statement is ridiculous is in fact ridiculous.
b nets? nominated by stations, artists are not part of that process? ring a bell?
you may like the 'blowing your own trumpet' thing and that's totally up to you, but for me, me saying how great I am doesn't quite have as much meaning to me as someone else saying unsolicited that I done good. maybe that's just me,you looking for a scrap russell? wanna take your angst over software battles out on line, I'm up for one, pick a topic, I'll say the opposite of everything you say, ;)
Here's an idea: how about you do it yourself?
you younguns, always wanting to tear down the old and build it new,
what's wrong with acknowledging faults and fixing the current system?
I tell you if I do it you won't be coming along for a free piss up at my expense, and I don't think that's something you want. -

The b-Net nominees are basically nutted out and negotiated over by the station PDs, and they consist of things that they playlisted. I can't see how that could really be transferred to a national industry award And, as I said, if it was, you'd be complaining about how a small cabal was picking all the nominees and the little guys couldn't even enter.

Yes, it probably is.
you younguns, always wanting to tear down the old and build it new,
what's wrong with acknowledging faults and fixing the current system? To what earthly end, though? How big exactly is the group of artists that would meet awards criteria and is actually interested in doing it, but doesn't want to join IMNZ, or pay a $100 entry fee or even enter in order to be considered?
-
To what earthly end, though?
I'll take that as a yes please.
the earthly end being an awards system that focuses on acknowledging greatness across all artists. is that really so offensive to you? its a simple, basic concept. if you're not doing that then don't use the term new zealand like you represent everyone, it obviously doesn't.
it should be the rianz music awards.and I think you misunderstand the current independent movement, the whole point is to not be part of a club, that's the independent part of it. that shouldn't exclude you from recognition by your country for excellence in your artform.
Yes, it probably is.
are you saying the best compliment is the one you give yourself? you're easily pleased :)
-
it should be the rianz music awards.
It used to be called that, but it's hardly a name to conjure with. And unlike ARIA it's not even a word.
Before that it was the RATAs and before that the Loxene Golden Disc Awards. That was a good name ...
-
but it's hardly a name to conjure with
but it is accurate,or more to the point not misleading, if that counts for anything.
I personally like the sound of the Loxene Golden Disc Awards,
vodafone gold disc awards?
Vodafone silver disc awards
Vodafone 5 meg data file awards?
vodafone golden download awards?got to be something in there somewhere they can use

russell, did you do anything about getting the spore people to address the difficulties in installing their legitimately purchase software? I'd like to hear how they respond.

Unofficially and apologetically. EA are new to the download thing and they've got it crazily wrong. It's just stupid to take $100+ for a download you know might be flaky, then give people three times ever, in the life of the product to install it.
-
and? are you going to take it up with them, they can never learn if you just suck it and keep quiet.
surely you're entitled to a fresh install with 3 lives? -
The customer reviews on Amazon are filling up with people complaining about the DRM on Spore and giving it 1 star (although 90% of them are by people who haven't actually bought the game).
Personally I didn't have any problems with the DRM (which is not to say I won't in the future). The game itself however was a bit of a disappointment.

This maybe old news for those interested in alt means of interacting with your computer but Johnny Chung Lee has been working on some alternative uses for a Wiimote controller - finger tracking, interactive whiteboards (on any surface) and VR head tracking.
Another source of Wiimote related projects can be found here.

ouch, that was possibly the lamest award show I've ever seem. a significant portion of the winners didn't bother to turn up, the mc's were lame, and in contrast with the down to earth nature of many of the nz musicians the set looked like some crazy fashion shoe set up, obviously dreamt up by people out of touch with their own countries nature and culture, wanting to reinvent it as something more international no doubt. The sound wasn't bad though.
what a sham what a shame.
