What seems to be forgotten in much of the debate is that TV3 is a commercial enterprise and is entitled to do whatever its management think will make it the most money. It just happens that TV3 has let John Campbell to create a show that has become part of our cultural heritage.
Unfortunately Campbell Live has been so successful that it allowed TVNZ to embark on its disconnection with public service broadcasting with almost no protest. It's only now that Campbell Live is under threat that we have woken up to the fact that there will soon be no one left on TV who is prepared to ask the hard questions and stand up for the underdog.
As for TVNZ's part, its management has done nothing but squander its resources and talent to pay for the bloated salaries of its executives and self-anointed "stars". It should be be stripped of the NZ bit and sold on Trade Me for $1 reserve. Profits (if any) from the sale should be used to set up a TVNZ7 type channel showcasing local talent, providing informed debate and a new home for John Campbell and his team. -

Broadcasting is a limited, regulated industry. Licences can include whatever conditions governments decide to negotiate in the public interest.

If that is true then it is also equally true for 7 Sharp, and the various radio shows hosted by Hosking and Henry and their ilk.
IMHO the 6pm news is also largely entertainment, going by how it's structured and advertised, on both major channels. I guess there have always been elements of entertainment, but lately I think it's become much more than a decade or two ago.

Too many commercial enterprises forget the many national resources that society pays for that enable their commercial activity.

Hi Sacha. Does this carry in any way to internet streaming, given that things tend to be moving that way? If not then more general media regulation would probably be more relevant over time, at which point I suppose you run into the problems of trying to define what counts as 'media'.

Doesn’t doing so require obtaining explanations from authorities?A big part of the 'holding to account' process is getting information air-time, and effecting a change (whether anyone fronts to explain or not) - arguably the 'Zero Hours' back down has been massively aided by Campbell's championing of the fight - and now Woodhouse has said they'll amend the legislation - looks and smells like being held accountable to me (even if they are just driven by fear of missing out)
- it will also be interesting to watch Simon Bridges try to wriggle out of offering to double-lane a Northland bridge the NZTA had advised his office prior to the blatant bribe being made that it could not be double-laned!

John Key appeared on roughly half of the stories on last night's TV3 News -- even on a sports story! While I'm used to seeing him get more coverage than is healthy in a democracy, asking the Minister for Everything to comment on every bloody story is bordering on the ridiculous, even for the new, Nat-friendly TV3.

A subdued, unquestioning population must be a politician's wet dream.

Oh I’d love to see our regulations updated to match the reality – to take one angle, as commentator Paul Brislen was saying earlier, think NZ on Screens rather than NZ on Air.
If we decide news has public value beyond being entertaining, then let’s make arrangements accordingly. Same with local stories, live performances, multimedia art and other cultural forms. There are many ways to do that with both markets and regulations.
I would also like to see acts of journalism recognised with legal privileges, rather than those being attached to people or organisations who are no longer keeping up their end of the social contract to hold power to account and provide information to enable citizenship in its fullest sense.

just hearing her there today made me feel years younger and more optimistic – some weird deja voodoo going on there…I keep picturing Guyon Espiner barricading himself in his studio in Auckland: "Make the scary lady go away!"

True, but I don’t know that having a Black President has advanced the lot of the AfroAmerican cause that much at all – if anything it has now become open season on their menfolk by Law Enforcers.
I don’t see Clinton offering much more than ‘hope’, which is free to give and take and crushable – as Obama has shown.

It's about role models. Also about your group. I think it is hard for those of us who are not Black Americans to appreciate what Obama has represented. Even if you do not like her or her politics, Hillary Clinton is claiming a space that women have previously been denied. That message is very important. It is also why she is facing such sexist attacks.
