  • Damian Christie,

Yeah it's not really advertising if you are paying the person to 'advertise' their product for them, which is what happens at the moment with 1 and 2. It's an historical oddity, and I believe a reasonably lucrative one.

And just plain wrong if you ask me. Commercial channels benefit by having people tune in to their offerings and therefore it should be treated as advertising. Public broadcasting is, by definition, a public service paid for by the public through their taxes.
It would make sense for it to be treated as a public service announcement and as such it would be required for chosen publications to carry them as a service if requested. I am not sure about the status of public announcements in this regard but I am guessing this is the process, correct me if I am wrong, please.
Had this been the case I am sure there would be less of a chance for this Government to ditch TVNZ7.

Absolutely, this show ain't over yet. TVNZ 7 has a year and an election to live through.

The Listener is moving away from the TVNZ 6 & 7 audience. Towards Good Morning, Fair Go and whatever programme TV3 puts Paul Henry on.

There will also be an Open Letter from a bunch of academics (we do care!) circulating soon, with strongly worded objections to the government's action/inaction.

Once again, 'belt-tightening' has little to do with TVNZ7's impending switch-off, if certain pet projects are anything to go by. It's more symptomatic of NZ's most anti-intellectual period since Piggy Muldoon.

    Geri-attrition...?
re: that list of TV viewer age / demographic survey breakdowns.
I can't believe there is no 60+, or beyond, there has to be a big wave hitting the offshore economic bell curve buoys just about now...
...backed by a lot of spending clout, an implacable force pushing all before it weighted by either opinion or custom!

in many ways TVNZ 7, should be the channel to surf that wave...
it has (to recycle a phrase recently dropped by Fairfax) "exclusive compelling content", it doesn't condescend or insult, it engages and stimulates - this should be the "beach" of sanity we can retreat to, away from the high rollers and frothy deluge of the Commercial channels.

(or is this meant to be Heartland's job?)

...while TVNZ U just shows the utter contempt both the broadcaster and advertisers must have for the 15 - 24 year-olds (formerly known as valued youth) of New Zealand.

    ........

    plus @ Islander
I may have the wrong end of the stick about what your connection problem is, but if you have access to Sky, have you tried channel 077 for TVNZ7 as I think the FreeView channels are all available to all Sky viewers

The Open Letter is getting some good attention. Pleased to see how some of my academics colleagues have pulled finger on this issue.

Just posted a comment regarding the dim-witted New Zealand Horrid editorial. They obviously understand zilch about ratings.

I'm going to make an effort to stay civil about this ... copy-pasting a statistic straight from another publication's editorial column is poor. When the statistic itself is a non-sequitir, it's just embarrassing.

The rest of the editorial isn't much better. Monte Holcroft is whirring in his grave.

Plagiarism is a Press Council offence, if I'm not much mistaken.

Quite. Not plagiarism. But the copying of a nonsense statistic demonstrates that the author of the editorial was just throwing around numbers without really knowing what they meant. Poor.

I hazard a guess it's yet another J----- B---- spout-fest written from behind a gated community comfort blanket (the name I explicitly refuse to print). If so, she's the J--- R------ of the Listener. Would she prefer a News of the World climate?
