Good morning Islander, Hebe and Chris, I was pleased to come across, but have yet to try, James Wong's recipe for Elderberry Jam, which he suggests as a delicious way to take in the anti-viral properties of elderberry. I'm a big fan of his. Here is the link to the jam on his site. Elderberry is such a weed in Canterbury - when we lived in Shirley I pulled out hundreds of seedlings from the nearby stream banks. However I fully intend to keep a shrub of it 'in captivity' when I get into a more long-term home.

I think that a compendium or thread of obscure and archaic vocabulary is a great idea! A possible way to do it could be to throw it open for extracts in books where these are used, or some kind of context that gives an indication of usage. I particularly enjoy archaic usage, and am woefully ignorant of the current vernacular. For example, when something I said to a neighbour recently was replied to with the exclamation "Shot!", I had no idea of what was meant! :-)

I know some people take olive leaf extract as an antiviral. Unfortunately I am allergic to it. :-) -
Re: word thread...a great idea, but aren't all our threads inclined to veer off into wordy excitements, obscure terms, puns and poems? ;-)

Makes me nauseous but beloved thrives on it. Doesn't have the same "shoot it and kill it" effect on the flu as Sambucol/us.

One of my favourite spring-things – pittosporum. You really only get the benefit of the scent if you’re out at night.

It took me years to work that one out - till I looked closely, I didn't even know those bushes had flowers till then. So secretive. Tiny, dark and hidden in the leaves. And even more secretive, a night scented flower that blooms in spring when it's not exactly tempting to be outside enjoying it......

Mmm, Pittosporums. And happens I took my first Pittosporum flower photo of the season earlier this afternoon. This must be the commonest species, kohuhu, P. tenuifolium. The flowers inconspicuous even though out in the open above the leaves in full sun - they're only about 8mm across and so dark-coloured. Scent comes on in the late afternoon, lovely.

And here's one from about the same date 3 years ago, flowering almost over on karo = P. crassifolium, street planting down the road from me.

Wednesday morning, 8am. View from my classroom - it was a lot more spectacular than my phone will admit. Would've been even better if the students had bothered to show up....
